COCOA, Fla. – The Cocoa law enforcement chief has adjusted office policy to reduce the cruisers from acquiring stolen.

“I do not want to go into element about the coverage, but I can convey to you it is a no brainer, you really do not go away your auto functioning and unlocked with a key in it,” Chief Evander Collier reported.

Two Cocoa police vehicles had been stolen in May possibly, in just one of the functions, officers went on a two-county chase on Interstate 95.

The incident occurred just days following Collier was sworn in as the city’s new law enforcement main.

Xavier Cummings, 33, was arrested on May 6 together Interstate 95 in the vicinity of Daytona Seaside following two chases spanning areas of Brevard and Volusia Counties.

According to an arrest report from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Workplace, deputies ended up alerted to a chase involving a stolen Cocoa Law enforcement Office car. The cruiser was entering Volusia County, heading north on I-95 in Oak Hill.

Deputies reported they managed to flatten some of the tires on the cruiser. A Cocoa officer involved in the chase managed to thrust the stolen cruiser off the highway into a tree line and an Edgewater officer pinned the stolen vehicle in so that it could not go away, records show.

On regulation enforcement human body digicam online video, deputies and officers can be noticed draw their weapons and at minimum a person law enforcement puppy is seen in the video with its handler. In the video, Cummings is purchased out of the car or truck. According to the report, the person armed himself with pepper spray and exited the motor vehicle.

“They had been happy to see us out in the neighborhood, that was a single factor, the existence. They were taking pleasure in the truth that we had been anxious about their worries,” Collier reported.
